As I’ve stated in my previous post, I’ve had nothing but difficulty with TVFCU. Yesterday I took a list of my grievances down to their branch at 715 Market Street in downtown Chattanooga and tried to close my account. I’d purchased an iPhone app from the Apple Store that morning for $.99 which hadn’t cleared and had a charge pending from Netflix (which the manager read back to me as Netlife) that didn’t show online in TVFCU’s interface. I couldn’t close the account. Fabiola, the manager I spoke to was very argumentative and for my part, so was I. I asked her to call me when the charges cleared and promptly called Netflix and they very politely reversed their charge (it was for a trial period that ended a few hours before).
I gave the manager my debit card to assure that no additional charges would be incurred in the interim and she cut the card in two in my presence. This morning I checked my account online and was surprised to find a DB CRD RPLCMNT FEE for -$15.00 on my account.

I’ll be calling TVFCU again this morning to resolve this new fee. Again, avoid this institution.

I’ve just moved to Chattanooga, TN in the past three months or so on the ArtsMove Grant from CreateHere. I really like Chattanooga, it reminds me of Portland in the early 1990′s, brimming with potential and on the verge of becoming an arts mecca. I needed a bank when I got here and having had great experiences with OnPoint Credit Union in Portland and North Carolina State Employees Credit Union in Wilmington, NC., I chose Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union. I’ve had the worst expedience I ever had in my life with this institution. Here’s a list of some of my interactions with them-

I signed up for an account online via their web site on January 4, 2010. At the end of the sign up process I was informed that I had to wait for a confirmation via the U.S. Postal Service to confirm my account. This method was inconvenient for me so I printed the letter and dropped by their office at 715 Market Street to open the account in person. They put a hold on my deposit, I thought it unreasonable but agreed to wait.

I received checks from TVFCU though I’d elected not to on their web site when I signed up. Their associate at the front desk explained to me that this was automatic with an online account sign up. This line is pasted directly from the email I received from eServices@tvfcu.com welcoming me to Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union.

“If you selected a checking account, your checks will be mailed to the address you chose within 2 weeks.”

I was charged $17.00 for checks that I did not order and had to make two separate trips to their branch at 715 Market Street to remedy the situation. I asked their associate for a receipt for the box of checks. He wrote it on the back of his business card.

I closed my account with the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union and had them mail me a cashier’s check for the balance of $62.00. I tried to cash this check at my bank, Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union. They refused.

I have tried on three separate occasions to link my PayPal account to my bank account at TVFCU. The transaction is refused by them every time.

I tried on Friday, March 26, 2010 to deposit a check for over $1000.00 into my checking account. They refused to deposit the check or call the check writer to verify.
I promptly took the check to a local bank and opened a checking account. They took the check, no questions asked.

I would avoid Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union at all costs. They will waste you time and treat you as if you are wasting theirs. In short, they are rude, obstinate and extremely unhelpful. Take your business elsewhere.
